Complete E-learning Websites
Survival Skills for Coastal Managers
This e-learning site has been a big and ongoing project geared towards state coastal managers, city planners, and the interested public. The content is all about how zoning, development, and decisions are implemented in coastal areas. I created (or repurposed, or modified) all graphics, developed and researched all content, and designed and coded the site. If you are interested you can find more of it here. Not very funny or exciting, but relevant and effective. This site won a Sloan Consortium award.
Training Needs Assessments
Based on materials from a discontinued classroom course, I turned this into a just-in-time learning tool about the basics of conducting training needs assessments. It was listed as a Sloan Consortium resource of note.
Web Content Design and Evaluation
Web Content Design and Evaluation is an e-learning site (and classroom course) for which I developed the concept, researched the content, and wrote the material. The section correlating Kirkpatrick's levels of evaluation to Peacock's web user hierarchy is my own unique idea. Very exciting...
Public Trust Doctrine
This is just another conversion of a classroom course to e-learning.
Web and Print Brochure Content
Note: I pulled these off of an old work file CD so there might be some HTML quirkiness depending on the browser you use (this stuff is going on 10 years old)
Conductor Training Management Software
These pages were part of a site devoted to a software program Sage Corporation sold (and still sells) to hospitals. (I was part owner of Sage). I developed the concept and wrote the copy.
Online Brochure for CBT Services
This was an online version of a print brochure developed for Sage Corporation. I dreamed up the concept and wrote the copy, trying to carry the theme throughout the piece without being trite or heavy-handed. I think I got it right as this brochure got lots of great comments and generated a lot of interest.
Online Brochure for Interactive Presentation Development
I had a blast writing the copy for this one. A conversation (fueled by a tasty beverage or two) about space travel led to my developing a campy space motif. It was a trade show favorite that drew a lot of smiles yet generated real interest in the product.
Online Brochure for Website Development and Consulting
This page was a beta version of a brochure for Sage Corporation which never made it to print but lived on the web for a while. Writing this was mucho fun for me. The graphics were copyright-free ones I found on the web which were then modified by a graphic artist.
Documentation and Help Files
Short Press Release for Conductor Training Management Software (MS Word file)
'Tis merely a press release for a piece of software. Pretty short but we got a lot of interest.
Software Manual (PDF format)
I wrote all the copy and made all the graphics (mostly screen captures though) for this manual.
Audio Script Sample from Multimedia (Rich Text file)
Over the years I created many narration scripts for various multimedia projects. This is just a short sample.
Content Outline Example from Training Course (Rich Text file)
The content outline is an intermediate step in the educational multimedia storyboarding process. The above is typical of the many I wrote. Not the most exciting task in multimedia but a very necessary one.
Bid / RFP Response Sample (Rich Text file)
At Sage Corporation, I wrote all proposals, created invoices, etc. Basically I wrote all the business correspondence because no one else could.
Online Help File (HTMLHelp format)
Here is a help file I created based on the paper documentation for an online federal grant application website. Unfortunately the system never worked quite right and the project went on the shelf.
Online Help File (Winhelp format)
I am a pretty good at developing help files using Robohelp. This is a tame little example of a help file that shipped with a piece of software. I programmed, wrote the copy, and created the graphics. To view it you will need to download three files (1, 2, 3) to your computer and then double click the file Ncacpa.hlp .
Other Graphic and Web Stuff

Logo for a small online retailer. And this was the full header/menu.

Logo for a neighborhood association

Logo for a Dish Network affiliate
Logo/banner for an online flower company
Logo for a web hosting company

Header for a non-profit jazz organization. Here is a flyer I created for one of their concerts. And here is a screenshot of the website I made for them for the 2001.
NOAA Locator Map (Flash-based)
I created this map as part of a 30th anniversary website. It shows the locations of various offices within NOAA. You can pan and zoom the map using the control pod. Plus by clicking on and off the Legend items you can turn various divisions off as needed to make the map more readable. It was supposed to be part of a larger effort to create a truly interactive office locator on the NOAA intranet, but in inherently-governmental fashion the project was abandoned without warning. (You'll need Macromedia Flash player to view)
Training Course Menu (Flash-based)
I created this menu for use in an online training course. But during the development of the course renewed awareness of the Americans With Disabilities Act and its consequences for accessibility made using Flash-based content a bad move. And here is a audio/text box I also developed that could not be used either. Pretty basic stuff that would make a sophisticated Flash programmer chuckle. (You'll need Macromedia Flash player to view)
Timeout Centers
The link above is a screen grab from a website for something called Timeout, a sort of strange hybrid of hypnotherapy and massage. I built what they wanted but the entire enterprise was strange and squirrelly.
Information Design, Instructional Design, Usability Consulting
At NOAA I have provided in-house information design, instructional design, content creation and editing, and usability consulting for a variety of projects. The list below catalogs some of these projects:
Music Related Experience
Although I have a lot of interests my dream job would be to work in some capacity for a company making music software, musical instruments, audio hardware. For example, writing user manuals for mixers, firewire recording interfaces, soft synths etc. would be extremely interesting and let me merge my love of music and technology with my skillset. And for what it's worth... my musical background:
High School: alternate all-state (VA) bassoonist, played tenor and baritone sax in jazz band
College: General Manager of college radio station WODU 640AM, took courses in electronic music and recording techniques
1989-90: production director for the Virginia Symphony
2001-2005: board member of Charleston Jazz Alliance, Poetic Jazz Society
Instruments played: guitar, bass, drums, tenor sax, a little bit of trumpet (enough to scare the cats). Decent knowledge and understanding of MIDI and various music hardware and software.
And for laughs, I developed this amusing flyer for a fake product in response to applying for a job at Mackie in their marketing department. They wanted proof of something quick and creative in a hurry (a couple of hours) and this actually got me past the first cut. It still cracks me up.
